Mission Statement

To provide professional advice and technical expertise to citizens, elected officials, appointed boards and commissions, and City departments to assist in understanding and addressing key community issues and priorities.

Further, the department's mission is to encourage sound and ethical planning principles that promote rational, economical and environmentally efficient use of land that allows North Augusta to grow in a manner consistent with the goals of the community.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Comprehensive Planning -- Develop, maintain and implement the North Augusta Comprehensive Plan.
  • Land Development -- Manage all applications for land subdivision and development within the City limits.  Develop, maintain and implement the North Augusta Development Code.
  • Zoning -- Maintain the Official Zoning Map, respond to day to day community zoning inquiries and manage the Map amendment process.
  • Demographics -- Compile and analyze population, housing, employment and other data from the U.S. Census and state and local resources.
  • Research -- Solicit, analyze and publish information related to urban planning and land use topics.

The department also provides staff support to two City Boards: the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Planning Commission.  Each board meets monthly, as needed, in the Council Chambers on the 3rd floor of the Municipal Center, 100 Georgia Avenue.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is a five member quasijudicial board that hears appeals from decisions of administrative officials and also appeals for variances from provisions of the North Augusta Development Code and for special exception uses as listed in the North Augusta Development Code Use Matrix.  The BZA generally meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Please click here for a schedule of 2019 BZA meeting dates.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is a seven member board that approves development proposals, including major site plans and major subdivision plans.  The commission also authorizes planning studies and surveys to be conducted by department staff and acts as a recommending body for updates and modifications to the City's Comprehensive Plan, the North Augusta Development Code, the City's Official Zoning Map and proposed Planned Development General Development Plans.  The Planning Commission generally meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Please click here for a list of 2019 Planning Commission meeting dates. 

Board of Zoning Appeals meetings and Planning Commission meetings are open to the public.  Agendas for each monthly meeting are stored in Planning Quick Links.  All persons with an interest in agenda topics are encouraged to attend.
