North Augusta Hometown Heroes
The City of North Augusta is proud to launch a new program that honors local men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The program, called Hometown Heroes, will salute current and former military personnel with banners recognizing their service. The banners will display a picture of the veteran in uniform, their service branch, and their era of service. Banners will be hung on City light poles along Georgia Avenue from late October through mid-November in honor of Veterans Day and from Memorial Day through July 4. The process to participate in the North Augusta Hometown Heroes program is simple:
- Complete an application form, either for yourself or on behalf of a veteran
- Submit a picture of the veteran in uniform and copy of DD 214
- Pay the $75 fee (covers the cost of producing the banner)
Applications are currently being accepted for banners. The deadline is September 20 for participation in the inaugural displaying of the banners this fall. All banners purchased will be displayed each year - there is no need to apply each year. Printed applications are available at the North Augusta Municipal Building or available for download here.
The North Augusta City Council unanimously passed a resolution on Monday, August 19 which authorized implementation of this program. The North Augusta Hometown Heroes program will be implemented in partnership with the Aiken County Veterans Council (ACVC). The ACVC will handle all applications for participation in the North Augusta Hometown Heroes program (including the $75 banner fee) and will have the banner produced. City of North Augusta staff will hang the banners on City light poles, and store them when not in use.
