Curbside recycling service is provided once per week on the same day for collection of household garbage, bulk waste, and yard waste. For your convenience, the City offers a recycling drop off center located at 61 Claypit Road in front of the recycling facility.
In 2018 over 5,500 tons of recyclable material was processed at the recycling facility. This would not have been possible without the 3,227 North Augusta residents who participate in the City's recycling program.
The City uses the commingled recyclables collection method often refereed to as the “Blue Bag Recycling Program”. Sanitation customers who subscribe to recycle receive blue recycling bags for placement of recyclables. Once the recycling bag is full the bag is placed in roll carts with other household garbage. Recycling bags are removed from the waste stream at the City's Materials Recovery Facility and the recyclables are sorted and sold to reprocessing companies.
Recycling is part of our community’s effort to help be more sustainable and save money. To participate in the recycling program please fill out the online Blue Bag request form or call 803-441-4240.
To encourage backyard composting, the City is selling compost bins at a discounted price of $55 each. In comparison, retail compost bins can cost upwards of $100. Each bin comes with detailed instructions on installation and what can/can’t be composted and how to properly maintain the compost and the bin. Order your Compost Bin using the online service request or call 803-441-4240.
Backyard composting compliments North Augusta’s blue bag recycling program, and is a great way to reduce your household waste. Did you know grass, leaves, and other wastes from lawns and backyard gardens account for an estimated 18% of the annual municipal waste stream.
What is Composting?
Composting is simply a combination of yard debris (like grass clippings and fallen leaves) and kitchen scraps (such as fruit and vegetable spoils), separated from the waste stream and placed into a composting bin for decomposition. Through composting, you can experience the benefits of this rich soil additive giving you healthier and greener lawns and gardens.
Unwanted electronics are one of the nation's fastest growing waste streams. Often called e-waste, electronics contain potentially hazardous material such as lead and mercury that can pose a risk to human health and the environment if not properly managed.
Did you know residents are required to recycle electronics. In July 2011 South Carolina Legislation passed a law making it illegal for residents to place or discard electronics into a solid waste stream Please place unwanted electronics curbside near your roll cart.
Please note that due to the cost to recycle certain electronic a fee of $25.00 will be added to your utility bill per Television, Computer Monitor and Printer.
There is no charge to dispose of vacuums, toasters, stereos, computers and other similar devises.
Since 1993, the City of North Augusta has operated a Materials Recovery Facility where residential and commercial solid waste and mixed recyclables is processed and separated into individual commodities, including cardboard, glass, aluminum and different plastics. These materials are baled and sent to processors to produce new products.
